Solvent flattening and NCS averaging: real space

• Correct map should have flat solvent, equivalent density for multiple identical copies

  • phase errors introduce features in solvent, differences between identical copies

• Flattening solvent removes spurious features

• Averaging N copies reduces noise by factor of N1/2

• Caveat: NCS may not be perfect
