Solvent flattening and NCS averaging: real space
Correct map should have flat solvent, equivalent density for multiple identical copies
- phase errors introduce features in solvent, differences between identical copies
Flattening solvent removes spurious features
Averaging N copies reduces noise by factor of N1/2
Caveat: NCS may not be perfect
